“The idea of fried laksa came about when I accidentally fried laksa in the kitchen” says Madam Teoh Gim See, co-owner of Well Cook Gourmet.

She then continues saying that she loves cooking asam laksa and when she accidentally fried it, she served it to her friends and they all loved it and suggested that she sells it as well.

That was how the fried laksa was born…by accident!

This restaurant is managed by a husband and wife team. The owner Mr. Chin Gok Ton has always supported his wife in her career choice. He understands his wife’s passion for cooking.

This husband and wife team first started off their business in 1987 at the Yaohan food court in The Mall. They started off their business with a stall selling claypot noodles and rice.

When travelling to The Mall became such a tedious everyday affair, he suggested that they look for a place in Subang Jaya which is closer to home.

They opened Well Cook Gourmet in the year 2005.

Other than her famous fried laksa, a second popular dish is the tomyam claypot noodle. She makes the tomyam paste herself, blending and preparing all the ingredients a task that takes her 2 hours everyday.

“We do not buy our tomyam paste from Thailand. Everything is made by us”, said Mr. Chin.

The restaurant also serves a variety of other noodle dishes such as Penang prawn mee, ‘char kuey teow’, ‘pan mee’, and many more. They even serve a variety of rice such as claypot chicken rice, claypot chicken porridge, fried rice, and Cantonese rice.

The many local delicacies that are mouth watering.

Another local favourite served there is the popiah. The popiah tastes as good as it looks.

Most of their customers are students from nearby colleges, office workers and also Subang Jaya residents.

A regular customer Miss Tan comes all the way from Penang to have her monthly dose of fried laksa.
“You cannot find this in Penang. There are a lot of hawkers serving laksa dishes in Penang and yet I have not tasted anything as exquisite and satisfying as this”, says Miss Tan.

Another regular patron, Miss Gan Hui Ling who lives in Subang Jaya did not know the existence of this restaurant until she stumbled upon this restaurant by chance on her way home from work.

“After a long day at work, and you are stuck in a jam, a plate of fried laksa is all you need to keep you sane”, says Miss Gan jokingly.

The popularity of this restaurant is spread through word of mouth.

As this restaurant is pork-free, there are customers of different races who enjoy the food and visit frequently.

A customer Peter M., says he enjoys the fried laksa and thinks that the price is reasonable at RM5.50 per plate.

“To me, the food here is good and the girls (workers) are efficient”, said Peter.

When asked what attracts people to his restaurant, Mr. Chin says that “My food is good (while he shows a thumbs up) and my restaurant is clean. That is why people come back to us”.

The operational hours of this restaurant is from 12 pm – 9 pm and closes on every alternate Mondays.

There are many other places that serve good and tantalizing laksa but none of them have the fried laksa on their menu.
