Parking dilemma for Monash students.

Due to the expansion of the student population, parking has been a daily hassle for students of Monash University Sunway campus.

Just the mere mention of parking on campus and students are frustrated as there are very limited parking spaces.

“I have to be in campus very early in the morning just to find a parking space and my class is at 2 o’clock in the afternoon”, says student Qisthina Razin. Students have no choice but to be on campus by 9 o’clock in the morning or they would have to queue up a long line outside the car park and wait till someone leaves.

Due to the lack of parking spaces on campus, students are forced to park their cars infront of the shop lots opposite campus. This has gotten most of the students a RM 80 summon just for a short period of a one hour class.

Some would even try to park in the “desert area” beside campus. As it is shared by both students from Sunway University College and Monash University, it is impossible to find a parking.

Both students and Monash University Student Association (MUSA) have been coming up with suggestions to solve this issue.

The administrators strongly recommending car pooling as it is one the most effective ways to solve this problem. However, for some reason though it may be the easiest way, Malaysians do not seem to fancy the idea of car pooling.

Student Lau Mun Yee suggested that Monash should build a multi-level car park. When asked, MUSA President Yvonne Yap, she says that currently it is not economical to build a multi-level car park but there will be one in the near future.

Building 6A and 6B will be built on campus and there will be approximately one thousand parking spaces as there will be a podium and a basement car park.

Another solution suggested was parking bays at Sunway Pyramid where a special shuttle bus with GPS tracking will travel every 30 minutes following a timely schedule. It will cost students a flat rate of RM2.50.

Based on a survey done by 50 students, 82% of them feel that parking at the new hostel will help to solve the parking problem and only 18% agree with the idea of car pooling. None of the students are in favour of parking their cars in Sunway Pyramid and taking the special shuttle back to campus.

None of the long-term solutions have any effect on the current students whatsoever. In order for this problem to be solved, Yap advises every student to be cooperative and try to be patient with the current situation as solutions are already in the pipeline.
